What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of increasing a web site's visibility in the 'organic' search engine results by improving "on-site" and "off-site" factors that affect the ranking of the web site's pages for a given set of keywords. "On-site" factors include internal parameters such as page titles. "Off-site" factors include parameters such as one-way backlinks..

What is the difference between "Broad", "Phrase", "Exact" and "Negative" keyword match types
These keyword matching options are mainly used by PPC engines to determine which searches can trigger your PPC ads to appear. However any user could use them when they are doing a search in a search engine.

Here is an illustrated difference between 'Broad' and 'Phrase' type match.

Broad match searches are when you type the keyword into the search engine without quotation marks. For example:

  orange nj widgets

Phrase match searches are when you type the searched words with surrounding quotation marks, like this:

 "orange nj widgets"

Broad matches are what you normally get when you type your keyword into a search engine. For example, when you do a broad match search for the words 'orange nj widgets', you'll likely get a list of Web sites which sell or make widgets in Orange, New Jersey. However, you'll also get matches for Web sites that merely use the words "orange," "nj," and "widgets" somewhere within. It could be a produce distributor in New Jersey or a widget producer in Orange County, California. Those Web sites are targeting a different market and coincidentally use similar keywords.

To get a more accurate search result, you must use Phrase Match searching. To conduct a phrase match search, enter your keywords into the search engine with quotes around them, like this: "orange nj widgets." This ensures that the only results shown by the search engine are pages that contain these words grouped in the same order that you provided in the search field.
When you do a "Phrase match" search, you'll find only Web sites that have this particular keyword in the specified order within their pages.

To read about "Exact" match and "Negative" match you can visit this Google help section on keyword matching options.
How long does it take to achieve results?
The answer to this question really depends on the chosen Internet Marketing services. With a basic SEO package we guarantee that you will see your site indexed in major search engines within 60 to 90 days. Within the same amount of time, you will see that many of your pages will consistently rank higher for several of your main keywords. With the addition of a social media package you could achieve first page ranking within 6 months.
How can I ensure that my website is listed first on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)?
There are no method nor company that can provide such a guarantee of being on first SERPs. You can use a variety of techniques (some free, some other fee-based) that can help to improve the rank of your website for a given set of keyword. To improve search engine ranking you can use both techniques from Search Engine Marketing and Social Media. If you need an immediate on-line presence you could use a Pay-per-click and/or Web Media Placement programs. Check our out Internet Marketing section to read more about the services that we offer.
How Long Does it Take to Rank high on Search Engines?
The time to rank well depends of 3 key factors: How well-known or recognized is your site or brand, how competitive is the market you're in and the amount of work that you are willing to invest. If your site is well established on inside a niche field then you could get some initial results within a month. For new sites or sites inside a highly competitive market, building quality inbound links takes more time and so it could take up to 6 months before seeing any significant increase in traffic.
Can hard work always get my site on first page of search engines for a given keyword?
NO. Some keywords are so competitive (e.g: "real estate") that the effort and expense to rank well for them isn't worth the investment.  What should be done instead is to optimize your website for less competitive keywords (e.g: "commercial real estate agent") and get a better ROI. Getting your site on the first SERP for a very specific keyword that is highly competitive is not always impossible but cannot be done in a reasonable amount of time.

Analyzing the expected ranking results is part of a solid marketing planning and one of the Internet Marketing service that we provide. To better understand the challenges in analyzing your competition read our SEO Competition Analysis article.
How do I know if my site has been indexed by the search engine
To know if your site has been included in the index list of particular engine, you can go to that search engine and type in the keyword: "site:domain.com". If the search engine displays any of your pages in the SERP then it means that the indexing of your site has been started but not necessarily completed.
Search engines first visit your site pages and then they will proceed to do an evaluation of each page with pages of other sites on the web.
Another indication that a particular page has been indexed is the assignment by Google of a PageRank value for that page.

Alternatively, you could sign up for Google webmaster account (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/) and get all crawling and crawl statistics made by Google from that account.
Which search engine is the most used?
By a big margin, Google is the search engine people use most. Google not only provides web search through its own home page, but also provides search results to other search engines such as Netscape and AOL.
In 2008, the research group comScore estimated that Google hosted an average of 235 million searches A DAY!
How can I find the average number of time a given keyword is searched in a day?
There are free keyword tools that will provide you with such information. The first one we recommend is the adwords tools from Google (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). Then we recommend Wordtracker (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/) and Keyword Discovery (http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html) that are both offering free keyword tools capable of providing the number of searches made for a particular keyword.
Is there a way to tell search engines that we have new content?
If your site has already been indexed by the search engines then it will be placed on a re-scan schedule. Search engines will periodically revisit sites to see if there are new content to be analyzed and indexed. So, if you have created new content, the search engines will most likely find it within a month or sooner, that will depend on how frequently your site is being updated. If your site is updated daily, search engine will probably visit your site every day.
What is PPC: Pay Per Click?
Pay per Click (PPC) is an internet advertising platform that uses keyword-targeted search engine and content ads delivered via an advertising network in order to garner immediate web site traffic and sales. The process begins with the advertiser designing an ad and associating it with keywords/phrases that web users might select when browsing for content and/or products.
For a comprehensive study on PPC go to our Pay Per Click Advertising section.
Can plagiarism of my site content by another website hurt my rankings?
Yes it can. If another site is using duplicate or near-duplicate copy of your pages content, it puts your site at risk of receiving a plagiarism penalty from search engines. Such penalty may badly alter your ranking and even have your site completely removed from the search engine database.
Monitoring for plagiarism could be done using Copyscape/Copysentry. Once you find plagiarism you should first try to send a polite message to the offending site to have the "stolen" content to be removed. If that does not work then you could send a notice of infringement of copyright (also known as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) infringement) with Google, Yahoo and all other major search engines to make the offending site to be removed from their search results.
